SEO, AEO and GEO are not three competing disciplines. They are three answers to three different questions: can a machine reach your page, can it lift a passage out of it, and does it trust you enough to name you. Most teams are sold all three as separate services when the honest answer is that one of them is a prerequisite and the other two are the same job described from different ends.

What do SEO, AEO and GEO actually mean?
SEO wins a position, AEO wins a quotation, GEO wins a recommendation. That is the shortest accurate summary. In more detail:

That last row is the one nobody puts in the comparison table, and it is the most useful. GEO comes from "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," presented at the 30th ACM SIGKDD conference in August 2024, which reported visibility gains "by up to 40%" and released a 10,000-query benchmark to test against. AEO has no comparable founding study. When someone quotes you a GEO statistic there is a paper to check; when they quote an AEO statistic, usually there is not.
Are these three different jobs, or one job with three names?
Google says one job. The citation data says at least two. Both claims deserve to be taken seriously, because they are measuring different things.
Google's guide to generative AI features is unusually blunt for a search engine. It says you do not need to break content into small chunks for AI, do not need to write in a special way for generative search, that "structured data isn't required for generative AI search," and that "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem." The eligibility rule is simply that a page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."
That is true — and it only describes Google. Ahrefs ran 15,000 long-tail queries through four assistants and checked whether the URLs they cited ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt:

Overall, 12%. Roughly 80% of citations went to pages that rank nowhere in Google for the query being asked. Semrush's study of over 500 digital marketing topics reached the same conclusion from the other direction: ChatGPT cites pages sitting at organic position 21 or below almost 90% of the time.
If SEO fully covered this, those numbers would look completely different.
Is the gap widening or closing?
Widening, including inside Google's own product. In July 2025 Ahrefs found 76.1% of AI Overview citations came from pages already in the organic top 10. Repeating the analysis across 863,000 SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs in March 2026, that figure was 38%.
One caveat that most write-ups of this number drop: Ahrefs states it "improved our parsing methodology," so part of the halving is better measurement rather than a pure shift in Google's behaviour. It also credits AI Overviews moving to Gemini 3 in January 2026 and relying more on query fan-out. The direction is well evidenced. The precise size of the drop is not.
What does SEO still do that neither of the others replaces?
Everything that determines whether you are eligible at all. This is not a legacy concern, it is the gate:
- Crawlability and indexability. Google's requirement is explicit — indexed, and snippet-eligible.
- Site architecture and internal linking, which is how a crawler discovers the page in the first place.
- Page performance and rendering, because content that only exists after JavaScript execution is content some crawlers never see.
- Understanding demand, which is what keyword research is actually for.
No amount of quotable prose rescues a page that a crawler cannot fetch. This is why the sequencing question has an unambiguous answer even though the terminology question does not.
What does SEO alone no longer cover?
Three things, and each maps onto a specific measurement:
Extraction. A page can rank and still be unciteable, because the answer to the question is distributed across six paragraphs rather than stated in one. That is the AEO half.
Evidence. Across 75,000 brands, branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, while backlinks managed 0.218. Mentions that carry no link at all outperform the metric SEO has optimized for two decades. That is the GEO half, and it happens on other people's sites.
Coverage. Being visible in one assistant does not carry over to another. The per-platform spread above is not noise; those systems use different indexes and different selection logic.
Which should you work on first?
In this order, and the order is not negotiable:
- Technical foundations (SEO). Confirm the AI crawlers can reach you and that your pages are indexed and snippet-eligible. Cheap, fast, and every other investment depends on it.
- Extraction (AEO). Restructure your highest-intent pages so each question is answered in one liftable passage. The KDD experiments found quotations, statistics and citations were the three most effective content changes, at 27.8, 25.9 and 24.9 against a 19.3 baseline.
- Evidence (GEO). Earn independent coverage and keep your entity description consistent everywhere it appears. Slowest, most expensive, hardest to fake — and the thing with the strongest correlation to being mentioned.
The one tactic to strike from any plan: keyword stuffing scored 17.8 in those same experiments, below the untouched baseline. It is worse than doing nothing.
What does each one actually measure?
Mixing up the metrics is how teams end up reporting failure on work that is succeeding.

Clicks are the wrong denominator for the last two. Pew Research Center found that users seeing an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary itself in just 1% — from 68,879 searches by 900 US adults in March 2025. The mention is often the entire outcome.
There is a counterweight on volume, though. Semrush puts the average AI search visitor at 4.4 times as valuable as an average organic visit by conversion rate, and projects AI search may outpace traditional search for digital marketing topics by early 2028. Small traffic, disproportionate value, growing base.
So is "AEO" or "GEO" just SEO rebranded?
Partly yes, and it is worth being honest about which part. The technical layer is unchanged, and any agency selling AI-era crawlability as a novel product is selling you 2012. Google is right about that.
What is genuinely new is that the unit of competition moved from the document to the passage and the entity, and that a large share of the decisive work now happens off your own domain, where classic SEO has no lever. That is a real change in where the budget goes, even if it is not a new profession.
Use whichever label your team already uses. Just make sure the plan behind it covers all three questions.
